Staying Positive this Holiday Season

That holly, jolly feeling is slow to infuse my spirit this year–I lost my mother just two weeks ago, and December 30 is the anniversary of my father’s passing. Now at any moment, a Christmas carol or family-oriented TV show can send me searching for a box of Kleenex.

Keep your spirits up throughout the holidays.
Keep your spirits up throughout the holidays.

I’m sure this is a feeling shared by many Baby Boomers and seniors who have lost loved ones this time of year.

But life goes on, as my parents would have it. I have clients to coach, classes to teach and grandkids to spoil!

So for the next few weeks, I’m going to do what I tell you all to do: eat well, walk as much as possible, lift weights twice a week, sleep as best I can, drink my water and love my family! A few poinsettias strategically placed throughout the house will also help cheer me up! And I’m going to work on my attitude, talking myself into happiness whenever I can.

To help with that task, I’ve looked for some inspirational quotes to lift the fog and grief. I hope you’ll find these helpful, too.

“Happiness is an attitude. We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong. The amount of work is the same.” Francesca Reigler

“I’m a minimalist. I don’t really need much to enjoy a good holiday – just my family and the bare essentials.” Jean Reno

“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn how to surf.” Jon Kabat-Zinn

“…For me, holidays are about the experiences, and the people, and the memories…” Evelyn Glennie

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” Winston Churchill

“Christmas comes during a season when the Earth is in its darkest time. It’s a holiday for the family and for everyone.” Melissa Etheridge

“Keep your face always toward the sunshine – and shadows will fall behind you.” Walt Whitman

“Attitudes are contagious. Are yours worth catching?” Dennis and Wendy Mannering

“Holidays in general breed unrealistic expectations. The minute you start wondering, ‘is it going to be wonderful enough?,’ it never will be. ” Pepper Schwartz

“For every moment you are sad, you lose 60 seconds of happiness.” Me
