Are You Rusting from Within?

Like all of us, especially Baby Boomers and older adults, if you’re doing any activity beyond breathing right now, the answer is a resounding YES!

I know, it sounds rather creepy, but let me explain what’s going on and what you can do about it.

The Ubiquitous Enemy: Oxidative Stress

As part of our normal daily metabolism, when we breathe in oxygen, we create something called free radicals.  These are oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of electrons.  Because of this molecular “freedom,” they can easily interact with other molecules.

Our bodies have a natural way of dealing with free radicals.  We have “good guys”–antioxidants that can grab onto the rogue electrons and neutralize their effects.  But this system can become overwhelmed by a poor diet, cigarette smoking, environmental contaminants, alcohol consumption, and other causes.

Like an apple exposed to oxygen, your body can become damaged within.

And when our natural antioxidants are overwhelmed, this leads to something called oxidation or oxidative stress.  Think of an apple that turns brown when exposed to oxygen.  The same thing happens to us.  We start to rust from within.  Too many free radicals wreak havoc by causing damage to protein, DNA, and fatty tissue in the body.  Unchecked, this damage can result in diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and brain diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

What You Can Do

One of the best ways to counter oxidative stress is with a high consumption of phytonutrients–naturally-occurring antioxidants found in all colors of fruits and vegetables.  There are literally tens of thousands of these micro-chemicals; most of them haven’t even been discovered yet!  They occur and act synergistically in the correct amounts–nature’s own recipe–in all fruits and vegetables.

The current recommendation is 7 – 13 servings of produce per day!  I don’t know anybody who reaches the higher level of that recommendation (including me).  Your best bet is to eat two servings (about the size of your fist) at each meal, and the same amount at (three) snacks daily.
