Comfortable shoes are critical
You’re finally ready to bump your fitness level up a notch and start walking! Walking is extremely popular with Baby Boomers and seniors–it’s easy on your joints, you can do it almost anywhere, and it’s effective in building fitness. So you have your course marked out, your buddy lined up, your alarm set. Just don’t forget about your feet—they deserve a well-fitted, supportive pair of shoes!
Find the best fitting shoes
Here is some advice from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society:
1. Shop at a specialty store and take advantage of its expertise.
2. Try on shoes at the end of the day or after a run, when your feet are largest.
3. Wear the socks you will wear while exercising.
4. Shoes should be comfortable from the start, and you should be easily able to move your toes.
5. Lace shoes properly when trying them on. Walk or run a few steps in them, making sure that the shoes firmly grip your heels.
6. Look for a sport-specific shoe if you plan to play a particular sport.
Now grab your water, lace up your shoes, and start putting on those miles!
